A pathogen is a microorganism that causes disease within all biological species. However, the pathogens we are most concerned about are those that affect the ones we love and the way we live.

Historic Impact

Historically there are many examples of human devastation that can be linked to pandemics.  The second pandemic in human history records was the Black Plague, which was the most fatal pandemic ever recorded.  Also known as the Black Death this pandemic was responsible for 75-200 million deaths worldwide.  However, with modern sanitation and medicines we have seen a reduction of the death that can result from pandemics.  Comparing our present concerns with the historical record shows that by utilizing current technological solutions we can reduce the impact of pandemics on our lives.  Humans have dealt with pandemics spread by novel influenza viruses in the past.  Each time we handle a pandemic we learn more about how to deal with the next one.

Spanish Flu

The 1918 Spanish Flu lasted over 35 months, and in total approximately 500 million people were infected, which was about a third of the world's population. This infection rate is remarkable when you think about the lack of world shrinking technology such as airplanes that transport the population around the world. It is hard to establish exactly how many people actually perished from the disease because of the lack of medical records at the time. However, the estimated impact is somewhere between 17 million to as high as 100 million people, making the Spanish Flu one of the deadliest pandemics in history.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is a respiratory disease caused by a virus that originated from a zoonotic origin, which surfaced early in the 21st century caused by the pathogen named severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV or SARS-CoV-1). The pathogen caused the 2002–2004 SARS outbreak in Asia.

The virus strain that has caused the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is known as the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which is commonly known as the coronavirus. It is highly contagious in humans to the point where the World Health Organization (WHO) has designated the ongoing pandemic a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. SARS-CoV-2 is a positive-sense single-stranded RNA virus.
